Preparing for Week 1--August 12th-18th
Yay---almost everyone has joined Google classroom! It was great to see and meet everyone yesterday--hope it was encouraging to you too. As a reminder, you'll see the work for this week at Google Classrooms under the topic "Preparing for Week 1--August 12th-18th. I have a few things I may add, so keep an eye on it. I will add the three photos assignment to that topic as well, so be sure to follow through on that for next week if you haven't already. See you next Wednesday!

Three Weeks Out
- A three-ring notebook (1" or better, 1 and 1/2") Even though we'll be meeting via Zoom, you'll still need to maintain a physical notebook with resources and notes from class.
- Page Protectors (25 or so) and notebook dividers (3 tabs TBA) Added 8/1
- 5 Pieces of plain white poster board---nothing fancy or expensive, basic--this will be the foundation for our American timeline and a map, a progressive project that will be added to all year. Added 8/2
- A supply of lined notebook paper for notes and classwork (wide or narrow ruled, your pick)
- A basic set of colored pencils and markers
- An 8"x 5" "ish" lined journal for collecting quotations from the texts we read. If you had my class last year, you can add to last year's journal.
- A functional printer with a ready supply of paper and ink
- A computer or laptop you can use for class meetings and independent work. The computer should have a working microphone and webcam so that you can participate. You'll also need a quiet place to Zoom without interruption.
- A Google account with an easy-to-identify name.

Summer Assignment
2020-2021 Booklist
They Say/I Say, Graff & Birkenstein, 3rd or 4th edition
The editions are very similar, so either will do. I'd recommend purchasing this used, as it's much less expensive. This is a great little composition book with the basics of rhetorical and academic writing. It's widely used at the college level but accessible.
![]() |
| The Boyhood of Abraham Lincoln Eastman Johnson, 1868 |
Up from Slavery, Booker T. Washington
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston
A Separate Peace, John Knowles
Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
Feel free to purchase any of these books used as long as the edition is unabridged. I prefer for them to have a physical copy of each book so that they can annotate. Roomier margins and a larger-size text makes for a better reading experience (8" X 5" as opposed to thrift editions with crowded text.) If you are able, please order all the books at the beginning of the year so that they'll have them ready as needed.
I may also add a booklet of short stories and poetry that I will publish at Office Max--one for each student. I'll have more details and the cost for this booklet once classes begin.

Weekly update
I look forward to seeing many of you at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial this Friday at 11:00. We'll meet in the visitor center. Admission for this school trip is $2 plus tax.For the curious, I am still working on your final grades and hope to be finishing up this weekend. The essays take time, and we were away last weekend visiting family.
Have a lovely summer if I don't see you Friday.
Mrs. Price
